How the verdict works

Three checks. One answer you can act on.

Agents say "UGC approved" about almost everything. A degree is only safe when all three of these hold at once.

01 · Institution

The institution is real

Listed under Section 2(f) or Section 3 of the UGC Act, or set up by an Act of Parliament. Not on the UGC fake list.

02 · Mode

The course is allowed in this mode

Engineering, medicine, law, pharmacy, nursing and architecture can never be done by distance or online, even at a real university.

03 · Session

It is approved for 2026-27

Online and distance programmes are approved per university and per session by UGC-DEB. Last year's approval does not count.

The traffic-light rules

Every verdict follows one of six rules.

VerdictWhenWhat it means
Danger: fake
Name is on the UGC fake list

Declared fake by UGC

Not a university under Section 2(f) or Section 3 of the UGC Act. Its degrees are not valid for jobs or further study.

Invalid course
Engineering, medicine, law, pharmacy, nursing, architecture or agriculture by distance or online

Banned in distance and online mode

Even a recognised university cannot offer these by ODL or online. The councils will not accept the degree.

High risk
State university teaching through a centre in another state

Territorial jurisdiction violation

State and state private universities cannot run study centres or franchise colleges outside their home state.

Caution
Real university, but the course is missing from this year's list

Course approval missing or expired

The university is recognised, but this programme is not on the UGC-DEB or council list for 2026-27. Check before you pay.

Check with the council
Law, medicine, pharmacy, nursing, B.Ed and other council courses

University confirmed, council approval to look up

We confirm the university. These courses also need their own council's approval, and we link you to that council's official list. This is not a warning about the college.

Questions parents ask

Before you sign anything.

Is a distance or online MBA valid for government jobs?

Yes, if the university and the specific MBA programme are on the UGC-DEB list for the session you joined. Degrees through ODL and online mode from approved universities are treated as equal to regular degrees under the UGC (ODL and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020.

Can I do B.Tech or LL.B by distance?

No. Engineering, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, physiotherapy, architecture, law, agriculture, hotel management and Ph.D. programmes are not allowed in distance or online mode. A centre offering them is selling a degree that the council will not accept.

The agent says the university is UGC approved. Is that enough?

No. A university can be real while the course is not approved for this year, or while the centre you are joining is outside its legal area. Check all three: the university, the course in that mode, and the session.

Where does Verify Campus get its data?

Only from official sources: the UGC list of 1,303 universities, the four UGC-DEB lists for 2026-27 (2,659 programmes), and the UGC fake-university list as on February 2026. Every report links to its source. How we verify

I already paid a fake university. What can I do?

Report it at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930, call the National Consumer Helpline on 1915, and write to UGC with your receipts. Keep every payment record and message from the agent.
